Trading at the local farmers markets is where our business started.
It allowed us immediate feedback for the product before we put in
any kind of major investment. We weren’t sure if Ireland was ready
for Californian style muffins and scones yet and after a few slow
starts, we got our answer. Yes!
Markets are a great gathering place. They have been known to
revitalise neighbourhoods, strengthen urban and rural bonds, and
give the city dwellers a taste of the small town life in the midst
of the big city. Our customers bring their whole family including
the family dog. They meet up with their neighbours or friends and
enjoy a chat over a cup of coffee while browsing over the organic
produce, fresh baked breads and colourful jams and tapenades.
Our customers are getting first hand advice from the producer. They
can find out how the product was made or where it was grown. What
you do with it or how to cook it. (How many supermarket employees do
you encounter that know the difference between cilantro and parsley
and what to do with it.) Most producers offer samples of their
product so you can taste before buying. Buying direct from the
producer gives that producer a better return on their produce. So
important these days when large agribusiness and supermarket chains
are putting many small family farms out of business.
Markets offer you healthier and safer food choices. Most farmers
markets are pesticide, GM and preservative free. Fruits and
vegetables have not been gassed or waxed to make them look more
presentable. Most supermarkets packaged their fruit and vegetables,
not only does that create more waste, but it does not allow you the
opportunity to feel or smell your produce before you buy it.
The markets we trade at in Dublin are very international. You do not
have to wait for that next trip to Italy to taste fine Italian
cuisine, just make a trip to the market. The Peoples Park, Dun
Laoghaire market boasts foods from Palestine, India, Italy, Sweden,
France, America, Lebanon and I am sure there are many more to come.
It is great way to learn about international foods and what to do
with them. You can create that favourite dish you had on your last
vacation or try new foods that you haven’t tasted yet. Its
wonderful. We hope you get out and support your local farmers
market or come out and see us. It supports not only your local
producers, but it is great for your community and a great day out
for the whole family. Hope to see you there! |
